James “Jim” Nielson’s life was defined by a steadfast commitment to excellence and a deep passion for Wyoming. Nielson was a proud accomplished energy leader, and his influence continues to be felt across the state and university he loved. A gift from Jim’s family was doubled by state matching funds to bolster the James Nielson Excellence Fund in the School of Energy Resources (SER)—support that has benefited energy-focused students, faculty, and staff since its inception in 2006. Nielson, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 91, began his career at Husky Oil, his family’s company, before founding several successful energy-related businesses. His leadership and dedication to the industry earned him recognition as a UW Distinguished Alumnus in 2016.
“In addition to being a respected leader in the regional energy industry, Jim Nielson truly was a foundational benefactor to SER—making possible success in delivering on our mission,” says SER Executive Director Holly Krutka. “It is an honor for SER to administer the excellence fund created in his name to ensure that the University of Wyoming can continue to deliver cutting-edge research, instruction, and outreach activities to support the state’s largest industry,”
In addition to supporting energy- focused students, this fund also sustains the Nielson Faculty Fellows program, which helps recruit and recognize outstanding faculty who are advancing energy education, research, and stewardship—ensuring Nielson’s legacy lives on through the work of future scholars and students.
