Few professors have left a legacy as profound as John “JT” Tschirhart, whose guidance shaped generations of Wyoming economics students, including alum Paul Turner. As Turner’s thesis adviser, mentor, and friend, Tschirhart left an indelible mark on his life, shaping how he thinks about economics and inspiring the values that guide his career.
“John’s impact on my life cannot be understated,” Turner says. “He figured prominently into the decision that Karleen and I made to start contributing to UW.”
It is in this spirit of gratitude and recognition that the Turners have pledged $1 million to establish the Paul and Karleen Turner Faculty Fund in Economics, a gift matched by the State of Wyoming to $2 million.

The fund will support the creation of a named department head, chair, or professorship and also may be used for faculty development, travel, outreach, continuing education, and awards—furthering the department’s national tradition of academic excellence.
“Paul, a distinguished alumnus, is known by name and reputation among our faculty, and his success commands their highest respect,” says Scott Beaulier, the H.A. “Dave” True Jr. Family College of Business Dean. “This visionary gift will further elevate our world-class economics program, enabling us to attract the most talented doctoral students and to sustain excellence for generations to come.
“We remain very grateful for our time in Laramie and for our association with UW,” the Turners say. “We hope that we can continue to be impactful in our giving.”
